Principal News

Dear Families,

Thank you for welcoming me to Holy Name. I have spoken with many students this past week to find out what it is they love about their school. Great facilities, awesome learners and the best school around – were some of the things they told me. I am genuinely looking forward to working alongside you all, throughout term 3.

Learning Meetings

Next Tuesday is an opportunity to come with your child/ren, as they walk you through their learning for the past term. I look forward to meeting many of you there. The bookings for this have been sent to you via Sentral. Please do contact the office if you require any help using Sentral.

National Day of Action Against Bullying

This Friday, the students will participate in an activity in their classroom to address this topic. It is also a great opportunity as a parent, to give your child the skills they can use if they feel someone is being unkind to them. There is 5 step approach you might like to help your child understand. Children try each step in this order. Of course, if someone’s safety is at risk, we always encourage children to report it to a teacher/adult straight away.

  1. Ignore the person
  2. Talk friendly
  3. Talk firmly
  4. Walk away
  5. Report the situation to an adult

With the impact of devices in our young people’s lives, you may wish to access the website below. It has many wonderful resources to help you and your family, navigate the online word.

Take care,

Year 1B News

This week Year 1’s has designed and created their own FIFA World Cup Football jersey that they would wear if they were to play in the FIFA World cup. Students used a variety of different art techniques to design their artwork. They used pastels and watercolours to create colourful patterns and designs. Students also wrote a couple of sentences describing their amazing artwork and why they love it.

Year 1F News

Year 2 News

We have been looking into adverbs and adjectives and how we can include them in our writing to become more interesting.

Year 3 News

Spring is nearly upon us, and the days are starting to become longer. I was in Queen’s Park recently and was amazed how good the gardens and the park look, carnival time is not far away.

Learning meetings will occur on Tuesday 22 August in the classroom. Your child will lead this meeting and inform you on what we have done this term in our units of work.

Learning Focus:

Religion – Saint Mary Mackillop, Scripture to create an image of God

Mathematics – money, angles, and 3D shapes

English – literacy rotations, information report (research, structure, and draft)

Science – solar system, moon, sun, and earth

HASS – Australian States and Territories

Health – getting along and working together

Reminder, if your child is away, please let the office know so accurate rolls can be kept by the school.

Have a good week.

Sport

Sport News

We have had a busy start to the term with sport!  This term we will be participating in touch football lessons with Noah Lester from QLD Touch, thanks to our sporting schools grant!

The year 5 and 6 children enjoyed attending Netball and Touch Football in Catholic Education Week and participating in carnivals against the other catholic schools in the diocese!

We had a few children attend the Central Zone Athletics Carnival and compete for a place in the Central Zone team!  I was very proud of their behaviour on the day and their sportsmanship – we are particularly good at cheering each other on!  Congratulations to Jok, Ramesses, Mayen, Garang, Malachi, Archer, Archie, Libby, Plamedi, Sassy, Ella, Jocelyn, Akiit, Viola and Inara for giving it their best shot!

Special congratulations to Ella Larkin for finishing second in the final of the 200m and gaining a place in the Central Zone team to compete this Tuesday at the DD Athletics carnival.  Also well done to Jocelyn for making the 100m sprint final, Ella for making the 100m sprint final and Archie for finishing second in the high jump with a personal best!  Well done to Plamedi for finishing 4th in the Shot Put and Archer for finishing 4th in the 800m event.

On Thursday the 10th of August, I took the Year 5 and 6 boys (plus a couple of substitutes in Libby and Plamedi) to Grammar to compete in the SEQ Football Carnival.  The boys played against Grammar, St Mary’s and Mary Mackillop and tried their hardest all day!  They enjoyed the Grammar canteen very much and also playing footy with the high school boys during their lunch break.  I’m very proud of the effort they all put in during this event!

Any sport related questions please don’t hesitate to email me on jenna.taylor@twb.catholic.edu.au

Book Week

BOOK WEEK 2023

Children’s Book Council of Australia has its Book Week again this year in Week 7 – 21-25 August.  This is the week we celebrate all things reading and literature.  This year the theme is Read, Grow, Inspire.

The Book Week Dress Up Parade is being held on Wednesday 23 August at 8.30 am in the MEAC.

Students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character.  Holy Name chooses to have no winners because every student who participates in the parade receives a small prize.  We hope we see every student dressed up for this most fun event!  I wonder what the theme for the staff dress up will be this year……..
