Prep News

It’s hard to believe we are at the end of yet another term at Holy Name. We have had an enjoyable Term Three filled with lots of learning and fun activities. Highlights included Book Week dress-ups, celebrating 100 days of school, our first assembly performance, and Father’s Day celebrations. Additionally, we introduced the Mystery Bag Show and Tell, which was a big hit with the students. We travelled to Amaroo where we enjoyed bush walks and play and wriggling our toes in slimy mud. Our preps represented Holy Name beautifully. Thank you to our parent helpers.

I would like to acknowledge the incredible progress our preps have made this term, having learned all 26 letters of the alphabet and their most common sounds. Next term, we will progress to diagraphs and blends. All students have shown improvement in blending sounds to read words with 3,4 and 5 sounds, as well as sight word reading and writing. It has been a pleasure guiding them with their learning and I am incredibly proud of their achievements.

What did our Preps enjoy this term?

Naomi:  I loved going on the bus to Amaroo and reading with Mrs Kauter and my friends.

Isla: I loved painting and drawing.

Mataiya: I loved reading on the Ipads.

Mason: I loved playing with the magnets.

Atreyu: I loved building things in the bush at Amaroo.

Layla: I loved playing with my friends in the sandpit.

Sophie: I loved learning all of the letters of the alphabet. I am good at writing them.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday!

Mrs Kauter and Mrs Thomas

Prep/1 Gold - Jodie Inskip

What a term we have had!

Academic Growth: In Term 3, our students worked hard and have demonstrated significant academic growth, particularly in their reading, writing and numeracy skills. They have shown increased confidence and proficiency in these areas which has been exciting to see.

Exploring Religion: We investigated the life and times of Jesus and saw what it might have been like for people living around this time. We learnt about being a Disciple of Jesus and following in his footsteps to be a kind, caring and compassionate person. We practiced our skills in Meditative Prayer and experienced moments of stillness and silence.

Father’s Day Prayer Celebration: It was wonderful to see so many Dads, Grandads and other significant male role models attend our breakfast. We were well fed with delicious bacon and egg burgers, and everyone enjoyed the games on the oval. The students worked hard decorating a gift for their special person. Dawn Lantero reminds us that “Time spent playing with children is never wasted” so we hope you have enjoyed spending time with your child playing frisbee.

100 Days of School: Week 2 of the term saw the class celebrate 100 days of school with a day full of fun games and activities aligned with the theme ‘100 days brighter’. Students dressed in their brightest, colourful clothes and participated in a variety of challenges, from counting to 100 to creating art projects with 100 items. It was a joyful and memorable way to mark this milestone in their school year.

Book Week Dress Up Day: We had a blast during the annual Book Week dress-up day, with everyone donning costumes of their favourite book characters. The MEAC was filled with laughter and excitement as students paraded their outfits and shared about their characters. Teachers joined in the fun dressing up as characters from Bev and Kev, the picture book being studied in class. It was a memorable day for all.

Amaroo Excursion: The highlight of our term was an exciting excursion to the Amaroo Environmental Education Centre in Highfields. There, we participated in the ‘Gabarlah the Greater Glider’ nature play program. Engaging in activities like mud, sand, and rock play, construction with loose parts, creative outdoor play, a traditional Murri game, bushwalking, and sensory activities. These experiences provided deep learning opportunities both academically and socially. It was a fun and educational day for everyone involved.

As this term comes to an end, it is filled with mixed feelings. In Term 4, we will excitedly welcome Miss Hannah Patterson to the Prep/1 Gold class family. Hannah will take over teaching the class as I move into the Acting Assistant Principal, Mission and Identity role during Kerri-Ann Manthey’s absence. While I will definitely miss being the classroom teacher, I am excited to continue working with the class in a different capacity. I look forward to witnessing their growth and development over the final term of 2024. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support this year and for putting your trust in me to care for and educate your child. I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to be part of your child’s educational journey this year.

Through this novel study, students not only enjoyed the captivating story but also honed their skills in writing information reports. Additionally, paired fluency exercises continued to be a staple in our English lessons, helping students improve their reading fluency.

We also tackled the concept of time, understanding how to read clocks and calculate durations. Our exploration of angles introduced students to the basics of geometry, and regular practice of times tables ensured that everyone strengthened their multiplication skills.

Religion

This term, we have focussed on understanding who Jesus is and the significance of his messages. Through engaging activities and discussions, students reflected on Jesus’ teachings and their relevance in our lives today. We also participated in Pietra Kids in our Health lessons, a program designed to deepen our spiritual understanding and connection.

HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences)

Our HASS lessons were filled with vibrant discussions and creative projects as we explored celebrations around the world. Year 4/5 - Danni Canning

It has been an amazing term! I know I say this every term but, I am SO proud of my students in 4/5!

The dedication I have seen from the students this term has been outstanding! This was evident through the time and effort they put into their HaSS assessment. The students were challenged to research about a person important to the gold rush and then deliver a speech based on that person. The class became really involved and creative with the way they presented their information. They dressed up as that person and presented to their parents. It was a great afternoon!

The 4/5 and 5/6 classes went to the Cobb & Co museum to attend the event, “Take another look Captain Cook.” During this event the students learnt about First Nations perspectives from First Nations people. They learnt about what life was like back when Captain Cook arrived. During the sessions the students asked insightful questions to deepen their understanding of First Nations perspectives.

This week the Year 4 students had the chance to attend the Toowoomba Catholic Schools touch football carnival. They did so well! It was wonderful to see how they cheered on their peers. Throughout the day I witnessed how amazing and thoughtful Holy Name students are!

That is all from me this term. I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday. See you next term!

HPE - Jenna Taylor

Thank you all for a fabulous term of sport!

We have been busy with Athletics trials this term. CC Larkin and Rubys Bretz both made the Central Zone team and did so well with Ruby finishing 6th in the 800m and CC collecting 1st, 2nd and 3rd medals in all her events! The girls were unable to make the DD team due to their age, but going by their results, they will definitely make the team when they turn 10!

Lots of children competed at the Catholic Athletics Carnival at the beginning of this term and represented Holy Name so proudly! I am very grateful for all the supportive parents who keep showing up and allowing their children to participate! I’m so proud of our little school!

In PE lessons this term we have competed in a variety of games and skills including soccer, touch football, tagging and co-operative games.

Swimming carnival is coming up in term 4, so keep an eye out for nominations for this great event!

Thank you again for a wonderful term, and as always, if you have any sport related questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
