Newsletter Report

Week 6 Term 1 2025

Dear Holy Name Families,

Today marks the beginning of Lent – the 40 days of preparation for Easter.  On Ash Wednesday, we gather to pray, and our heads are marked with a cross from specially blessed ashes, a symbol of repentance. During Lent, many people also choose to fast and abstain from eating meat on Friday’s.  Growing up, I was encouraged to ‘give-up’ something for Lent and our playground discussions were all about our choice.  I have included a link below to a Lenten Family Calendar from the Jesuits.  This has some suggestions for families to ‘do something extra’ rather than ‘giving something up’ during Lent.  Suggestions include; saying a prayer as a family for others, inviting someone lonely for a meal or taking over a chore for another family member.

SRIP

The Holy Name School SRIP (School Renewal and Improvement Process) is scheduled for Week 9. The review team would like to hear from the school community and I encourage anyone who is interested to have their say. Your feedback is important and will help us to continue to achieve the two pillars of TCS: that all students will come to personally know Jesus and that all students will achieve academic success.

Feedback can be provided to the review panel in person or by telephone. All feedback remains confidential.

Please contact the school office if you are interested in speaking to a reviewer. You may also register your interest by emailing holyname@twb.catholic.edu.au .

PEN AGM

If you are interested in either the President or Vice President roles, please send an email with your contact details and the experiences and skills you believe you could bring to the role to the Holy Name email address by Friday 7th March.  The PEN AGM is scheduled for Tuesday 11 March at 5pm.  All welcome to attend.

God bless

Lisa Cavanagh

Project Compassion 2025

This Lent, we are called to Unite Against Poverty through Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. Your generous support this Lenten Season will enable Caritas Australia to provide life-changing support to communities facing poverty, food insecurity, lack of education, and water shortages, while building resilience against future challenges. Together, through faith and action, we can bring hope and opportunity to those most in need.

You can support Project Compassion 2025 through the donation boxes in each classroom or by scanning the QR code above.

Or online at: caritas.org.au/project-compassion
Or by calling: 1800 024 413

Thank you for standing with us, as we Unite Against Poverty this Lent.

Blessings

Prayer

God of our journey

we are all pilgrims of hope

brought together by your love

and your wish that we may all be one.

We pray that in this Year of Jubilee

when we are called to greater justice

and care for our common home

that we may Unite Against Poverty.

May we work in unity for the freedom of the oppressed

and the renewal of creation.

May our compassionate minds and generous hearts

help bring about a world where all can live in peace.

May our Lenten pilgrimage of fasting, almsgiving and prayer

bring us closer to your loving heart.

We ask this in the name of Jesus.

Amen

NAPLAN 2025

NAPLAN is a nationwide assessment administer to students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 across Australia. It assesses students’ proficiency in literacy and numeracy through a series of tests covering reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy skills. The results provide a snapshot of students’ performance relative to national benchmarks and assist schools in monitoring progress over time. This year the NAPLAN test window will be held over two weeks, from 12-24 March.

As educators, our primary goal is to empower our students to perform to the best of their abilities. Leading up to the NAPLAN assessments, our teachers work diligently to ensure that students are familiar with the format of the tests and have the necessary skills to tackle each component confidently.

We empahise the importance of staying calm, focused, and well-rested on the day of the assessments, reminding students that NAPLAN is just one measure of their academic progress and not a reflection of their worth as individuals.

While NAPLAN is an important tool for assessing student learning, we believe that it is just one aspect of a well-rounded education. Our curriculum is designed to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration skills, which are essential for success in the 21st century.
